January 7, 2010

Composer, Writer, Sound Designer, Producer, Remixer:
Chico Slamm aka Jump “Chico” Slamm ……“The Cutmaster”

Name:Faustin Moran Lenon
Born:  January 4, 1970

As a youngling of age 4 made a drum set out of cardboard boxes, pots, pans and an ice bucket top for a cymbal; after watching a television performance of the Jackson 5. Faustin was inspired by a wide range of music including Soul, Rhythm and Blues, Disco, Funk from his father born in Washington D.C. and including Salsa, Merengue, Mozambique, Bomba, Plena, Soca, Calypso, Samba and Reggae from his Mother who is a native of Panama.

Obviously had taken an interest in music; by age 7 organized “jam sessions” with fellow musicians in Elementary School (Waverly Elementary) Raymond and Faustin Jr. collaborated on songwriting under the Waverly Elementary School Music Classes taught by Mr. Arnette. Faustin and Raymond would meet after school and write songs on an a Kimball Upright Piano and any drums available. After writing three songs, they entered the Waverly Elementary School 51 Talent show and were able to entertain an audience of over 100 people with a reasonable applause.

By age 9 attended a few classes at Baltimore’s Peabody Conservatory of Music for Piano Practice/Technique and reading/writing music. Basically continued experimenting with various forms of Percussion instruments including Piano, Xylophone, Steel Drums, Congas, Timbales, Kit Drums and Djun Djun. Until age 12 when getting his first pair of Turntables. Had seemed to get away from creating music to playing music from his own perspective so that by age 14 was a known neighborhood Dj under the East Side Djs Man, Dj Darrell Middleton and Dj Rock. Along with Dj Grittle (Timothy Middleton) ( Darrell‘s little brother), DJ Jamie and Dj Flash (Chico slamm) all in the 8th grade formed a 3 man Dj Team that eventually got acclaim throughout the neighborhood and Spinned Parties for about a year until they all wound up going to high school. By now Chico Slamm had interests in recording and frequented the 3 neighborhood recording studios and wound up recording at Top Notch Recording Studios (Baltimore). After recording a compilation of tracks consisting of drums, bass lines and some experimental keyboard lines; Chico Slamm knew that what he wanted to do was to Compose/Write and Produce Music.

In the summer of 1985 Chico Slamm moved to Chicago to live with his father and began to understand a different form Underground Club music; living in Chicago’s South Side and subsequently being exposed to the Chicago House Sound by way of “Dj Spooky” who was also a young neighborhood Dj. Chico Slamm became familiar with “The Dance Set” with the Chicago House style and other uptempo music selections. While watching the Best of Chicago House Djs perform at the Pleasure Dome (Gary IN), was able to submit mix tapes as auditions for Dj spots to various Club Promoters in Chicago but was considered to be too young by family at age 15. Chico Slamm continued with Djing and recording his ideas however possible but mostly making Hip Hop and Dance mixed tapes.

His stay at Chicago was not long and returned to Baltimore with a few more ideas and, now back to where he had more access to recording studios; began recording more songs and tracks which included Hip Hop, Ska, Salsoul, House and Hip House. The last part of 1985 was when Chico Slamm had delved into club promotion with Adidas night and Fila night at Odell’s (Baltimore) with not enough success, teamed with Chris Beggs, Mike “Dj Quest” Felder, Big Daddy, Bo Pete Ferrari, Bo, and Dax Johnson to promote parties. Together they founded CPI productions inc. The parties turned out to be a success and led to Chico Slamm, Mike “Dj Quest” Felder and Chris Beggs getting Dj gigs with Colleges and Universities in Baltimore.

At age 16, Chico Slamms Birthday Party marked the beginning of a night club partnership for CPI productions as the party had a very nice turnout and the venue was willing to continue renting the property on weekends hence “The Place” (31st st. Baltimore-Jan. 1986). As more Dj gigs presented for the C.P.I. Dj Trio; Chico Slamm began to introduce more of his recordings during his Mix Set and crowds responded to a few of his recordings: the best of which became “Crazy House“(unreleased), “Make You Sweat“(Released 1989 CUZN)and “Batte Con”(released 1995 CLR). At Odell’s in 1986, Chico Slamm took a brief interest in Light Mixing Dj Jerome Hicks, Dj John Dukes, Dj Tony Fashaw and Dj Wayne Davis.

“It was through Jerome Hicks that I was introduced to the set. He would let me spin from time to time which gave me the reality of rocking a well tuned Richard Long System in a big nightclub.” From there on Chico Slamm began introducing some newer studio work to Jerome Hicks. It did seem like a good things could happen but at a culmination point of a history of street dealings, Chico Slamm was eventually convicted of various charges and served 3 years at a Hagerstown Prison.

While in prison Chico Slamm received his GED and completed the Electrical Wiring Apprenticeship while subscribing to Billboard Magazine and reading up on Home Studio Recording Techniques.

By the time of his release (Oct. 1989) and at age 19, Chico Slamm had plans to start a record company. Getting back into the Baltimore Club Scene and reorganizing with Dj Jerome Hicks and Dj Chris Beggs at Club Fantasies, Chico Slamm began recording at Baltimore’s Mainframe Recording Studios with George Hagegeorge as engineer. It was then Chico Slamm founded CUZN records with the release of “Make You Sweat” (1989). Jerome Hicks and Chris Beggs introduced Chico Slamm to Dj Tony Humphries in 1990. Dj Tony Humphries also mixed and played ¼ inch reels of unreleased music at Club Zanzibar, on his Mix Show on 98.7 Kys and while touring.

Dj Tony Humphries is a Pioneer of Dance Music and Chico Slamm’s first recordings signed to record companies were a result of Dj Tony Humphries including some of Chico Slamms recordings into his Mix set. Chico Slamm, Dj Jerome Hicks and Dj Chris Beggs continued collaborating on Various recording projects and periodically formed Freestyle Jam Sessions live at Club Paradox (Baltimore). The Jam Sessions combined Dj Jerome Hicks’ Spin Set accompanied by Chico Slamm’s live keyboard/drum machine performance.

Although it was not unheard of on the Dance floors as Pioneering Djs have been known to incorporate live playing during their Mix Set; the science of combining Drum and Bass, Break Beats, unreleased recordings owned by the Slamm Productions trio and live accompaniment; inspired Chico Slamm to experiment with other Music Fusion Principals and Theories.

The explosion brought forth the creation of Chico SLamm’ “Wildstyle Theory” which fused Chicago Acid, Funk, Ska, Samba, Jersey Style Dance, Chicago Style Hip House and variations of “The 6/8 rhythm counts” mostly of the Western African and South American Traditions; with offspring’s of Underground Dance Cult Hits like “Tumblin Down” (Hermann on E-legal records),“Feel Free” from the Slamm Project (Cajual), Batte Con (CLR) and “House Thing” (unreleased E-legal) which was a Baltimore Hip House cult jam performed by Labtek Won, Faze and Chico Slamm as Sagatmanchu, formerly known as Sagat (Funk Dat) forming the group “3 Deep”. “Mainframe Recording Studios” became “Track In The Box” and eventually “The Sweatshop” Studios as George Hagegeorge expanded and as continuing Recording and Mix Engineer; Chico Slamm‘s recordings were done at those recording studios with the Exception of “High Heel Recording Studios“(Baltimore).

From 1990-1992, Chico Slamm had numerous live performances throughout the East Coast between New York and South Carolina using the artist names Blacksam, BlackStar and Oneson with Baltimore Dance and Choreography Pioneers Booda and Johnny “Kuumba“ Jackson, Russell and Juddy and the Almighty Mickey’s. It was during the years of 1991-1993 that Chico Slamm along with Composer/Writer/Engineer/Producer/ Mixer Tim “Phat Dahdee” Moore Founder of Dabrovasgroove and Glenn “DjTechnics” Brand collaborated Underground Smashes that still captivate dance floors to the present including; “Question Why is it? Jump Chico Slamm New Music After 13 years

Since I haven' t been on the scene as a producer and I haven't displayed any musical artistry since 1997. I figured I would make it easier on myself by blogging a response to a few often asked questions "What have you been doing Chico?", "Why haven't you been active?".

Well

Some people want to credit two particular companies with the full credit for my demise but actually that wasn't enough to stop me. I was involved with too many things and wanted to succeed at all of them at the same time. I was without experience and there were still lessons I had to learn about life and relationships while a lot of things went "haywire" and I had to balance my life out.

Of course, not being compensated for your works contributes to problems but I had released or co-released 15 projects in only 5 years time. From 19 to 24 years old trying to start a family, a business and an empire at the same time was just too much.

There really is no simple answer other than me being true to myself, getting my spirit right, getting other things accomplished like finishing my education with my interests in the building trades by becoming a Master Electrician and a Master Carpenter. I have been working for myself and Companies in the private sector mostly as an Electrician in the Industrial and Commercial fields. My specialties are exposed and suspended conduit work, switchgear assembly, project planning, path picking, feasibility and the practicality of blueprints, and finally lighting design. This would all be summed up as Design/Build in any size project. Finally I usually keep important or key positions as Large Projects Manager or as a Builder.

As long as I remember, I have been both musically and mechanically inclined which I think is a complimenting combination of interests because I simplify the both as Building. I perceive Building a House like I do Building a Song "From the foundation up". Ultimately, I still have goals as a Builder possessing several housing designs that would be approved on any terrain.

I have never stopped making music and I pretty much built my life around maintaining my own recording facility so that I could stay creative. I continued my studies with hand and stick drums under various drummers. I have had a few more things to learn about the music business and went through a lot of changes trying to put R&B, Rap soloists and groups together for myself and at other times for record companies as I sometimes get solicited for talent scouting.

I also have been active as "point" and consultant for a few Indy Record Companies and Artists for marketing analysis and strategy, competition factoring, promotion and A&R.
The independent struggle calls for those involved to be multi-talented or at least be aware of the current status of the given market in order to adapt to its changes. JCSLAMM

In my endeavor to be a better producer, I have familiarized myself with advanced recording techniques like multi-tracking; specifically, delayed micing, drums and ensemble recording. I rarely make my recording facilities available unless I am interested in the project or unless for emergency so recording time is ALL MINE or affiliated Artists.

I have kept the same fervor for composing, songwriting and music production since I was 14 years old and the three still drive and move me the same. I never really thought about getting into music for reasons other than I feel I have something special to contribute to the genres of music that inspire me to create.

Being musically inclined has certain responsibilities and if you are true to your craft then you must adhere to its calling. There were times I felt that I am not making the most of my life because I wasn't active in the music business and a sense of emptiness seemed to be prevalent but it only made me want to perfect.

Being a perfectionist has its pos/neg being: you can achieve unique applications of styling and can bring out your uniqueness as a creator; the negative being that it can cause you to be too hard on yourself in the process or can cause you to put unrealistic goals thereby hindering you from completing the project or completing the project on time.

A creation does not mean a "derivative" of any other idea as much as it means an original design thereby rendering a unique interpretation of the concept.

I have found that there have been a lot of things misconstrued about me, who I am and what I represent and that's why I love the internet because now the truth will be told because I didn't set out to achieve my dreams to be stopped by falsehood.

To all of my supporters "1LOVE" and to all of my enemies "1LOVE" but do you and yours a favor by keeping it real and staying away because I don't expect every one to Love or Like me and Mine.

Subscribe or keep a tab because your boy sure is going to have much to write about.

Till Then

Peace
